Be aware that the hike is hard and slippery in spots, but if you’re fit and you’ve got a sense of adventure this is a fantastic activity. Thanks Bruce!Posted on Google Paige HayfieldTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Bruce was such a lovely, supportive, and friendly tour guide and I truly couldn’t have done the hike up to the summit without his help. The view was amazing, and the long hike was really worth the rewarding views. Bruce shared knowledge about the local fauna and flora which was super interesting, and the group I was with were all super friendly. I did this hike solo (I’m 17), and I was really well taken care of, felt totally safe and looked after, and would do it all again in a heartbeat!! Definitely reccommend, this was the highlight of my trip. Thank you Bruce!!Posted on Google Elizabeth/Robert JollyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My wife and I completed the cross island hike today. Bruce is superb guide in every way. The trek is arduous and exilerating. 4 hours over roots and slippery creek crossings, ropes and chains. To reach the needle is not easy. We are both 69 and found it ok but very tired at the end. But if you come to Rarotonga you MUST do this trek.Posted on Google Jill WalkerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We were recommended by friends in NZ to climb the Needle? Pa’s Cross Island Hike. From our first contact with Bruce he was very professional and informative. Being briefed by Bruce fully about the steepness of the track, up and down, we enjoyed the natural nature experience. Views stunning, waterfall lovely and lunch was excellent. Bruce looked after everyone on the tour and it was hiked at your pace. Thanks so much for giving us a great experience. Frank and Jill. Bruce was a wonderful guide. Organised, excellent communication, friendly, funny and patient. He tailored the walk to the slowest and made everyone feel comfortable and welcome. He was also very knowledgeable about the island, its flora and fauna and lots more. Would highly recommend.Posted on Google Abi GailTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The Cross Island Hike: An Unforgettable Journey. This Cross Island Hike was absolutely worth every single penny. Granted, amid those spectacular, cliffs and the howling mountain winds, a single misstep or a momentary lapse in focus could send you plummeting into the cold, merciless abyss below. Life and death are separated by a mere heartbeat. On the thrilling paths, an experienced guide is the solid line of defense standing between you and the deep chasm. Bruce led me along the safest route—one he has personally verified countless times—anticipating fatal risks and neutralizing them before they could even manifest. Facing near-vertical Needle rock , he guided me to find the most secure handholds and footholds, teaching me how to use the ropes and iron chains to balance my body and ensure every step was on solid ground. Most reassuring of all was the steady strength of his hands, always ready to support, steady, or pull me up at a moment's notice. More Than Just a Guide: Beyond safety, Bruce deep familiarity with every plant, tree, mountain, and stone along the way turned the Cross Island Hike into an immersive educational experience. As he explained plant evolution, geological shifts, and cultural transitions, the journey effectively became a live masterclass in biology, geography, and history. Along the way, he was also quick to point out all the best spots for the perfect photo. When I was utterly exhausted during the climb, Bruce cheered me on and boosted my energy with double portions of nuts and fruit. At lunchtime, he even surprised me with a double serving of an exceptionally delicious sandwiches. This thoughtful, extra care did more than just fill my stomach—it infused this high-altitude adventure with a personal warmth, creating a cherished memory unique to me. Guarding the Mountain, Paving the Way: As a tourist who thoroughly enjoyed the breathtaking scenery, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Bruce, Pa, and these trailblazers who carved out the paths. Without them clearing the brambles and cutting through the thickets, this unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience would have been impossible. The ropes and iron chains installed at critical junctures didn’t just appear out of nowhere; they were chiseled and hammered in, stroke by stroke, to build a fortress of safety for all the Cross Island Hikers who followed. They don’t just work here; they meticulously care for the lush greenery of this natural landscape. They plant saplings, water them regularly, eliminate pests, manage invasive vines, and clear away litter. It is entirely thanks to their guardianship that the mountain retains its vibrant, living beauty. The Verdict: When we stand at the Needle rock, looking down and around, let us never forget that it is the local guides who paved our path to the mountain with their own two hands. Supporting them means supporting a deep reverence for nature, and it serves as the warmest possible return for their steadfast dedication and hard work. In short, the cost of the guiding fee is utterly trivial compared to the value of my life and safety. And if you count it as tuition for a masterclass in nature, it has already paid for itself a thousand times over. Bottom line: booking Bruce and joining his tour is worth every bit of it! Hike Safely
There have been many occassions over the year that’s that I’ve been called out to assist the search and rescue police in helping get a tourist that has been lost or injured on the track, please don’t let that happen to you or your family. We value your safety as some people underestimate the track or happen to get lost in some parts.
